No Internet (wifi) in recovery mode Big Sur Macbook pro 2020

Hi, i find big bug...

I have base Macbook pro 13" 2020 (13-inch, 2020, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) i5.

After upgrading to Big Sur, I wanted to do a clean install of the system.

I booted through cmd + r, but the system told me there was no wifi.

Internet was needed to update ...

I tried Option-⌘-R. The system took a long time to load, but entered the right menu. But even there (the system was loaded via the Internet), the Internet menu did not appear. The system says you need an internet connection.

The recovery menu was very laggy.

For a clean install, I installed Catalina and allowed booting from an external drive + disabled internet checking. After successfully installing Big Sur, I was unable to restore the security settings. they require internet, which is not detected in the recovery menu. Not even a badge!

How do i fix this problem? I want a clean install and all security settings. Thanks!

Friend! I'm not alone)

Thanks for your experience.

I also thought about buying usb - ethernet, if possible, please report the result. Installation of the beta version gave no results. Using iphone and more too. On the imac 27 2017 everything is without problems, the system works well. I was surprised, but everything was fine. It seems that this only mbp 2020...

Hi! I had the exact same issue, no Wi-Fi icon in internet recovery despite the fact that it was downloaded via Wi-Fi just a moment ago and I was unable to perform a clean reinstall because of that.

I'm happy to say that this issue is fixed in macOS Big Sur 11.1 and Security Update 2020-001 for Catalina. Install any of these updates to your computer and the Boot ROM will be updated to the latest version. After that, Wi-Fi will be visible and you will be able to reinstall Big Sur via internet recovery (Command - Option - R) successfully.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

im having the exact same issue here and no fixes found unfortunately.. I’m in the exact same scenario with a MBP 2020 13” where I want to perform a clean install and the only time I succeeded was to create a bootable usb but deactivate the internet checking. After installing Big Sur I wanted to reactivate the internet security feature that I’ve disabled in the past but you can’t to do that if you don’t have any internet connection. I’ve already tried to restore the T2 CHIP but nothing... I guess we have to buy an Ethernet adapter or wait till they fix it. From what have seen it’s seems that only the MBP 2020 is affected by this behavior, I’m curious to know if the recovery mode is as buggy as it is with the MBP2020 ob other macs as well.

Hi, I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one to experience this issue. Same MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports), Big Sur 11.0.1 (20B29), AirPort Extreme Firmware Version: wl0: Sep 11 2020 17:38:16 version 16.20.293.5.3.6.95 FWID 01-e5bd2163

I've created a USB flash drive to make a clean install on Big Sur.

An update (probably firmware) was applied on the first boot in the recovery mode (from the flash drive).

Looking at the AirPort FW date, it's probably this.

No WiFi icon at all, tried with the recovery mode booted from USB drive or the network recovery mode. The installation process could be started but at ~15 mn remanning, a network connection is required (no other option, forced to cancel). I was forced to reinstall Catalina and do an upgrade from the booted system. Working well, but not a clean install and no way to recover to Big Sur without passing via Catalina.

Have a nice day.

Yep seems like only the MacBook Pro 2020 is affected by this type of issue. I came to the same conclusion as you which is that the only way to install Big Sur is to first install Catalina and then Big Sur as an update but obviously it's not a clean install at all. So yeah when I first plugged in my Bootable Big Sur usb I got the same firmware update as Romain_p. As I said before that I've restored the T2 Chip but it's not working. As I also said, today im going to buy an ethernet adaptor and report to all of you the results.
