I have so far received 8 calls from 408-374-xxxx in one hour, each leaving a 22-23 second VM
claiming they are apple support. I use Verizon wireless with a call filter. How can I stop this from happening? I am using an iPhone, 6s. 14.1 software.

It is a scam. Apple doesn't make unsolicited phone calls. If there was a problem you would be notified when attempting to log in, including when logging into this forum. Also see: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204759
Also, the caller id number shown on scam and marketing calls is frequently not the number actually originating the call. The number is often spoofed.
One option to consider that is 100% effective for me is Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. See: Detect and block spam phone calls - Apple Support
