After migration Mail does not work

I migrated from an older Mac to a newer one compatible with Big Sur. After migration, when starting Mail, I get the dialog to set up the account . I select iCloud. After entering my icloud account name etc, I get the list of which parts of iCloud i wish to set up (all of it of course), after clicking the button to proceed, I can see that the button indicates being depressed by a colour change, but then nothing happens. I can appreciate it may take some time, but the dialog does not disappear, no spinning beach balls etc. The only thing I can do is to 'force quit' mail. What is going on here?

Hey there K2K Koos,

We saw you're having an issue setting up your email in macOS Big Sur. Congratulations on getting a new Mac. If you're unable to set up Mail, that's definitely an issue to look into! We'd like to assist.

For verification, the Mail app is entirely unresponsive once you turn on the iCloud Mail function and you then have to force-quit the app, correct?

Try holding Shift on your keyboard when you click the Mail icon to open it; this bypasses the saved state the app was last in. Does that help?

If not, try this next; when you see the prompt to select your iCloud services, try selecting only Mail. Does that help? You can then turn on your other services under System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud.

Let us know how it goes for you.

Have a good day.

I actually solved the issue. During the migration, my iCloud settings were also transferred, but not all were activated. When I went to Preferences, iCloud, and activated Mail (by ticking the box), Mail started up as normal and loaded all my messages.

It is still strange that the above behaviour happened, Mail should have checked if iCloud data was present on the machine and perhaps asked if I wanted to continue with that account or set up a new account. Because it did not, entering my normal iCloud account details caused the app to 'hang'/'freeze' as in my original post. A bug perhaps to resolve for Big Sur?
