Apple Music Quits Unexpectedly

Hi All,

Since today, any time I try to open Apple Music, I get the quits unexpectedly window. I have

1.) Reported to Apple

2.) Tried opening with new library

3.) Renamed old library

4.) Tried opening with a test user (this works)

I feel it isn't a library issue but and issue with something in my User?

I've had it work no probs since Big Sur's latest update (11.0.1 at time of writing), so don't think it is obviously that.

See below for error code (please tell me if the below contain confidential info)

So glad I stumbled onto this. The problem did not occur until two or three days after moving to new M1 MacBook Air (Big Sur, duh) from 2017 13" MacBook Pro running Mohave. Yes, using external monitor and Music started crashing on stop. <usual suspects…no joy>

Changed System Preferences Displays to Mirror Displays and all OK. Music is happy. Closed MacBook Air to go into clamshell mode, Music still running.

For me, having the external monitor connected (OWC T3 hub) in non-mirror mode is what seems to crash Music on launch.

Mirror mode, clamshell mode, seems OK so far.

Good luck, guys. Why this would happen is weird AF.

I have found a better workaround. Apple did not keep the callback appointment they made with me, but I did make some headway.    I went into the System Preferences/Display. On the panel for my external monitor I went to the the “Color” tab. In the Display Profile area, there were three profiles that were named exactly the same.   I deleted all three of them and after rebooting, I successfully started music.  Everything was fine until I moved the Music window onto the external monitor, where it "Quits Unexpectedly". So far I can use music as long as I keep it on the primary display. Oddly, I went back into the Color profile and there were three copies again. At this point, it is only a minor inconvenience. This should give Apple a decent starting point for troubleshooting. We'll see.

I seem to no longer have this problem, a few things changed...

I updated the drivers for my external disks (thunderbolt 4 disk enclosure), where my libraries are located. I also ran the disk utility and repaired the drives (no errors were reported), made the disks read only then read-write, on a whim to see if this had any effect. it shouldn't have, but I've seen stranger things happen.

so far, I have not had music quit on me for about a week. I use a second display all the time - I need to.

Hey Paulie,

It happens with all connections. Apple were slightly useful but they won't now respond to any of my calls or e-mails?! Not sure why - they sent a message saying that they had an update for me then...radio silence.

I have found a workaround now, which is pretty conclusive evidence that it's a Big Sur software issue:

  • If you use mirror mode, we know the Music app works. It stays open even if you swap back to extended.
  • Download the menu bar widget (Display Menu - https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/display-menu/id549083868?mt=12)
  • Originally, I used this to quick-switch between mirror and extended, however, if you simply change the set resolution of the monitors (I went higher) - it just works period.

Anyway - please keep updating as you find out stuff. I'll keep trying to get back in touch w/ Apple.

Todd, if you make a test account on your device, does Music load?

It does for me and I can even point the application to read my other user's library - though this is clearly not a workaround, it shows that the application itself and supporting files are okay, the library itself is okay but there is an issue tying everything together in the existing user.

I've migrated this user through 10+ years of OS X and wonder if this is one to many migrations? If so, I'd be grateful for a guide for simple internal 'duplication' (of sorts) to a new user. Of course, there are elements we'd want to leave with the old user - like the stuff that stops Music from opening!

Cheers

Right, I've located the issue. It only occurs on my user when I am plugged in to an external monitor. I have;

  1. tested multiple monitors
  2. tested with minidp/hdmi outputs
  3. deleted display preferences (lib/com.apple.windowserver.plist and ~/lib/com.windowserver.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.plist)

Nothing has fixed it, besides pulling out the external monitor plug.

This is clearly a Big Sur bug. I've reported to Apple and I hope it is fixed soon.

Hi Paulie,

Nice work around - it failed for me.

I'm sticking to using a 2048 x 1280 custom resolution as above (on the inbuilt monitor)

I have now tried to get in touch with Apple four times re: this outstanding issue (even the case number is still open!) and there has been absolute radio silence.

No fix on the new Big Sur update, either.

Not sure how to proceed.
