One question regarding Apple Music/iTunes

I have finally decided to start using Apple Music as my main music library.

Thing is, I've got quite a lot of records (CD an vinyl) that never made it to ripping to my previously preferred program (JR MediaCenter). So: instead of beginning a time-consuming process of ripping, would I do just as well by adding the same records from Apple Music to my library? I'm aware that it would lead to a minor loss of sound quality, but my main question is, if these files could be handlede (tagged and organized) without any limits compared to a ripped record?

(Thanks in advance.)

Hello okvaal,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! We're glad you reached out to us with your questions about how files are tagged and organized with Apple Music.

When you would import music into your iTunes Library in the past, you could change the file information (details, artwork, etc.) as you wished. With tracks which are imported from Apple Music any changes you make will revert back to the original information the next time the Sync Library connects to iCloud.

One thing to do would be to add a song or album that you have in your collection and see what the File Information contains in the tracks from Apple Music. That will help you see if there is anything vastly different.

This article will give you additional information about using Sync Library with Apple Music also: Turn on Sync Library with Apple Music.

If you have any additional questions please let us know.

All the best.

Thanks, OH.

Yes, I will do that test. And yes, I will have lots of questions, but most things are falling into their places now.

Just one more right now: I've got music from three different sources: 1) my own ripped CDs 2) downloaded from Apple Music and 3) purchased through Apple Music.

Could I feel sure that all this music will be treated in the same way when it comes to updates of AM, cloud storage etc?

And - perhaps one more - would downloading the songs (in addition to ripping) make any difference? Some of these things are a bit hard to find a precise answer to by browsing and searching the web and Apple Support. For there is no such thing as a complete "manual" to iTunes/Apple Music, is there?

Hi okvaal,

We're happy to help answer these additional questions about Apple Music. All of your music, whether downloaded from Apple Music, purchased through iTunes, or ripped from your personal CDs, will all be treated the same, with regard to Apple Music.

To determine the source of the song you'll need to go to Get Info > File to see if it is an Apple Music AAC audio file (downloaded from Apple Music), Purchased AAC audio file (purchased from iTunes), or an MPEG audio file (ripped from your personal CDs).

With regard to your question about downloading songs in addition to ripping them, if you do both, you'll have duplicates copies of the songs/albums. For instance, if you download "Song A" from Apple Music and you also import "Song A" from your CD collection, you'll have 2 entries for that song. One from Apple Music (AAC audio file) and one from the CD (MPEG audio file).

You'll find the Apple Music for Mac users guide at this link: Apple Music User Guide for Mac - Apple Support. You can also use the Help feature in the toolbar to access the Music app help which is built into the app.

Enjoy the day and your music!
