Music app problems in Big Sur

After upgrading to Big Sur (from scratch, so it has nothing else to blame), Music app has new kind of issue. I feel like I am using Beta software. Music app has improved over time since it was initially introduced. Many issues were resolved and new issues were introduced.

However, the new Music app for macOS from Big Sur introduced these new issues that shouldn't be there. Because they are very basic functions.

Here are issues I have experienced for using only 1 day:

  1. Drag and drop audio files to Music app. Music app won't start to copy the audio files until it is " on focus". This is a new behavior.
  2. After drag and drop the audio files, several to many audio files will have and "!" next to it. It indicated file can't be found. I check the music folder, audio files are copied over successfully. I have to manually fix each of them. If I don't fix them, next time when I drag and drop, duplicate files will exist in the music folder. It is consistently to have this problem.
  3. When I update all the files in an album, some of the files will have "!" next to it. No change to those files. I have to help Music app to find those file and redo all the changes. This get old when I have to do it for many files in each album I added.

As for loading existing album, existing album art, etc. They seem to be working fine. Thank you.

I think I found a workaround for #2 and #3. Let me know if that work for you guys.

In Music Media folder, there is a folder named "Automatically Add to Music". We all know what it is but rarely anyone I know using it. I started utilizing this folder. Instead of "drag & drop" from Finders to Music app or "Import..." from Music app, I copy and paste the audio files to "Automatically Add to Music" folder. So far, I notice there wasn't any issue during the importing that I experienced in #2 and #3. If I used the old ways, occasionally, there was still issues, just not as often as it used to.

Please share if you find alternative ways.

That’s exactly what I was using it for. I ended up disconnecting sync from icloud music library and am using my computer as the holder of all things music. I also started purchasing music from other sources because I don’t have the confidence I once had with Music app. I really think it was a mistake for Apple to attempt to force folks to using monthly memberships. While I realize the store is still available, it’s no longer visible as it once was. I am a musician and while I love Apple products I cannot stand what they have done to that part of their platform.

Good news. If I hold down the option key on my iMac while selecting my Homepods under the dropdown menu for Airplay Music will play to any combination of the Homepods. I once again have my music from my library playing throughout the house. While I am glad this is working again it would be nice if Apple gave you some kind of clue as to how to do this. Hope this works for you also "extankerman"!

After more than 2 years, iTunes/Music still have two same major issues (both introduced with Catalina)

  1. The soft divides some random records in two parts...
  2. During importations, the soft looses the links to the tracks located on the external drives (TB3). The tracks are well put in the folder, but iTunes/Music looses immediately the links, so you have to drag and drop the folder again to the left column...

For me it looks simple to adjust these two gugs... but it seams hard over for the Apple team of developers...

Verified on 5 different clean installations of course...

I am experiencing additional issues. Playlists not syncing with devices, the mouse is really squirrelly, while trying to change the order of songs in a playlist. It literally is changing the screen (similar to when you swipe the top of the mouse to go back or go forward). I wish they'd do a more thorough evaluation. I also can't seem to figure out where the option to select which playlists I want to copy to a device is? Really don't like the whole Finder thing. Ugh. Help.

I've had similar issues with my playlists, as well. A new thing I've also discovered is that when I click on a random playlist in my iTunes, the dock and main menu at the top completely disappear. Even the image that's used as the playlist artwork disappears. I can play the songs, but no dock or main menu to be found. This has got to be a Big Sur issue. I'm regretting the upgrade I did about a week ago!

I'm a bit confused... Since a couple of days, one of my playlists is gone. Normally, if I accidentally press delete, I get the "Are you sure you want to delete the playlist" warning. But not this time. I've gone through all of my other playlists, in case I dragged the playlist into a different one by mistake, but nothing.

Does anyone know if this could be a bug? It happened some time after installing Big Sur. I don't want to start to remake the playlist manually in case there is something I can do to find it. Does anyone know? I'm a bit scared of doing a restoration of the whole iTunes library, in case something else goes missing...
