Can i install Big Sur on an additional USB drive?

Hi There Friends, I have attempted to clean my 250 Gig Mac Mini (2018) of all extraneous programs and files (using MacPaw as well as the built-in IOS tool). Can I install Big Sur on USB drive if I were to add a new one. I currently only have the backup disc on USB.

Is it possible to install Big Sur on removable media? I would like to install a clean copy of Big Sur on a removable drive. Is this possible? I have tried on two different drives. Both times the installation proceeded normally until we got to the end. Then it seems to get stuck with "About a minute remaining" and never finishes. Is there some trick to get the installation to finish? Or is it just not possible to install Big Sur on removable media? Thanks, Andrew

Yes. It is a good idea to have bootable backup(s) and other media anyway.
