I have a brand new iPad 8th gen.
I just bought a small Bluetooth keyboard for it (put brand new batteries in it)
Everything works perfectly. Except, when I lock my screen, and let it sit for a minute or more, my keyboard won’t turn my iPad screen on when I push keys. Everything I’ve found when doing research says that I should be able to press any key on my keyboard to wake my iPad.

Just did a test to add to the discussion.
Since this functionality exists on iPhone, I'd assume it should work on an iPad.

Just spent some time with Apple support. In the end they just told me that this is “not a supported feature”.
Obviously, this is not a feature but just the nature of how Bluetooth accessories work. That’s why it works on the iPhone. Not that it’s necessarily a “supported feature” of the iPhone.
was never under the impression that was supported apart from apples smartconnector connected keyboards at least non of the bluetooth keyboard I've used have done that
