My desktop folders have disappeared!!

Why have my desktop folders disappeared? How do I retrieve them? I am in FULL panic right now. Please help!

Perhaps you enabled Desktop and Documents in iCloud. Please refer to Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support to help you determine if that happened.
