Is it possible — and if so HOW — to migrate everything from my old 2016 MacBook Pro to my new Apple silicon MacBook Air using a Thunderbolt 3 data cable ONLY? The usual "migration via WiFi" path would appear to be ridiculously slow, ergo I will prefer to avoid it if at all possible.

Yes, it’s two-way. The M1 Mac mounts as an external disk on the other Mac, you can copy files either way.
I do not know if Migration Assistant will work in that configuration (personally, I always set up new Macs by freshly installing apps and copying files manually, for the cleanest start possible).
Thank you, I had read this earlier before posting my question, but had apparently misunderstood it.
The directive seemed to me to suggest that the new (apple silicon) Mac was source only rather than target.
So data transfer can go in either direction then, correct?
