Ics attachment

My iPad is using IOS 12.4. When I tap on a “mime-attachment.ics” icon attached to a Mail e-mail, instead of a window inviting me to accept or decline I get a grey screen with the words “mime-attachment.ics ICS File” in the middle of it. The only choices from there are “Done” (which takes me back to the original e-mail) or the usual little box with an arrow pointing up (which offers several useless options).

Can anyone shed any light on this? The same icon does what one would expect on my elderly iPhone using IOS 7 and my iMac.
