Apple classroom - only one student visible

When opening a class in apple classroom, the screen immediately opens up the first student alphabetically. I then can't click off this student to select another student.

I can perform all the usual functions I would expect to with this student's iPad, but only this student's.

This is happening with all classes.

I've tried updating the iPad, restarting, resetting, and deleting and redownloading the app. None have helped.

Anyone else experienced similar or can suggest a fix?

The issue is on an iPad Air 3, and I'm on iOS 13.5.1.
