I received an Apple ID verification code and I did not ask for it> my phone is locked and the only option I have is to say okay. I am concerned that this is an attempt to access my phone. How can I verify that this is legitimate?

Someone may be trying to sign your Apple ID, which would generate the request for a verification code. Since you have 2 Factor Authentication enabled, as long as they can't access one of your trusted devices, they can't get a code, and sign in. You should be okay.

As a precaution, change your password.
