How do I restore the message icon that has disappeared from my screen?

You have iOS 14 installed and therefore you have the App Library which can be found by SWIPING LEFT until you go through your home screens and reach the App Library. Look for the SOCIAL Folder and in it you should find the Messages app. TOUCH, HOLD and DRAG the Messages app out of that folder and place it where you would like to.
