Can an iPhone XR be unlocked to work on AT&T from a T-Mobile locked iPhone? The answer is YES.
The catch is that the iPhone has to be unlocked by T-Mobile as you have discovered. Only T-Mobile can unlock that iPhone. T-Mobile, just like any other carrier, has its own requirements that have to be fulfilled before it will unlock the iPhone. Apple has nothing to do with this and will not do anything about it.

I inquired about having the phone unlocked with the Tmobile rep. I did not ask for the account to be closed. I had been a customer w A1 credit w all creditors including them, they told me the phone was unlocked but apparently it’s not and now that say it’s from some other carrier/network. As long as we had the phone it was with T-mobile.
There is no reason for them to not unlock the phone. Then they proceeded to tell me the phone doesn’t belong to them is unlocked etc for three days. Had they just said that, could have swallowed it easier now I’m **** bent to get the phone on. Now it’s another wasted device
There were two phones on the account as well. One a samsung and mine the Apple but they refuse to unlock it. Weird to me. I’m older and do not know all the intricacies of these phone policies. Thanks for your response.
Well am still having the dickens of a time getting TMobile to unlock the device. It is an Apple XR phone used through T-Mobile accounts. If it was unlocked for use on T-Mobile then it is capable of being unlocked by TMobile. It is paid in full. Very strange. Didn’t even know a phone could be limited to one carrier.
T-Mobile is under no legal obligation to unlock the device for you.
If you are not a current T-Mobile customer in good standing who meets their requirements for unlocking, they will not do so.
There’s more to the story, because T-Mobile is normally very good about unlocking phones that are not on a contract.
Have you called AppleCare, given them the model and serial number, and asked who it is locked with.
TMobile is REFUSING to unlock the phone. The phone is not under contract. If it was they could say it’s under contract. They are not unlocking the phone.
Again, have you contacted AppleCare and asked who it shows to be locked to?
How can I delete this thread? The phone is under contract but no one would say it’s under contract. We all have the same last name. T-Mobile could just say it’s under contract.
Thanks for your help everyone. Now I feel bad because I just knew I was right and they were being rude. Seriously they could just say the phone is under contract.
ALAS ALL IS WELL AND ORDER IS RESTORED IN THE KINGDOM. XR is back, no problem with T-Mobile. Thank you all for your help and responses.
I’m so happy to hear that this is resolved!
Keep well,
Happy Thanksgiving
Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours!
