iPad Pro with IOS 14 sidecar timeout connecting to late 2015 iMac Retina 27"

iPad Pro Sidecar wifi connection device timeout...

The both devices are connected to the same iCloud account, the Mac's sidecar menu shows the iPad. When selected it thinks about it for a few seconds the shows an error message "The device timed out".

Apparently the Mac is 'just' on the compatible list. It's running Catalina and everything seems to correct right up the point of the error message. So sidecar tries and fails every time.

Have signed in/out of iCloud on both devices.

Checked wifi and bluetooth.

Any/all help appreciated. ;)

Lots of searching and reading user groups like this.

Found a couple of posts mentioning iCloud logins etc. This turned out to be the key in solving the issue.

I did the various checks:

Made sure both devices were on the same LAN wifi network.

We have an extra 5g so a choice of two, made sure they were on the same one.

Made sure the Mac was at least the minimum spec. (27" late 2015 iMac)

Made sure the iPad had the latest update (iPad Pro, 2020)

Although worth mentioning the Mac has Catalina and constantly prompts for a Sur update.

Made sure they were 'trusted' devices (check your settings)

Then...

Logged out of iCloud on both and powered down.

Power up the Mac, log into iCloud.

Power up the iPad, log into iCloud.

I gave them a couple of minutes to think about it and used the sidebar controls on the mac.

Bingo, they connected.

Hope that helps ;)
