MacBook Pro won't download files from safari correctly.

SOLUTION: After calling in to Apple Customer Support we found a solution (simple workaround). If you "right click" (using two fingers to 'click') and select "Open Link in New Tab" it will open a new tab (that is blank) but will also download & open the PDF - I used this for a school PDF from the canvas site, I did not troubleshoot on other sites or files other than PDFs.

I've also submitted feedback to apple regarding this concern.

I was having this issue too downloading stuff from Canvas, what worked for me was opening the download link in a new tap by right clicking on it and then it asked if I wanted to allow downloads from the website. I accepted and so far its working

A temporary fix I found works by right clicking the attached file or linked file allowing the pop menu to appear. Once the menu is open you can click the share option and message to yourself and then open via the message app. Works for my MacBook Pro running Big Sur. Hope this helps.

Hey there! All seems related to university-type sites from what I’ve read.

On the site you are downloading from, can you click, on the top left menu:

Safari > Settings for this website, un-check “Enable content blockers”, and reload the site?

Otherwise I might check out Safari > Preferences > Websites:

Content Blockers

Pop Up Windows

And, if earlier even:

Flash, change those settings to allow, etc and reload the site.

Extensions in the Safari > Preferences as well is a goof location to check, if you have any, I’d uncheck-disable or I install them, relaunch Safari while holding Shift and try again.

I have the same issue. It has been happening for about 4 to 5 months. The one solution I have is using another browser. Chrome works for me.

I am trying to download assignments from Canvas, but it downloads as true.html with Safari, but not Chrome. So, its specifically an issue with Safari and not your laptop itself.

This worked. I shared it via email, and notes and the links allowed me to download it the regular .pptm.

Developers: Safari has worked before to download items correctly, why is it with Big Sur we have either download Chrome or take extra steps. Please fix!

I'm having the same problem described by others here. Using canvas, download .zip file, it downloads a true.html.

My IT support recommended not to use Safari. Indeed it works using Firefox. I don't like that solution.

I am able to download the ppt files from links posted by William Kucharski but not from my own Canvas pages. This used to work. i have tried to relogin and clear caches. still get the same problem.

I have this issue too, but I tried another browser like Opera and I was able to download that.

I have the same issue with downloads from Canvas. It works with Chrome though.

I am pretty sure the problem is because of Canvas. I don't think it has anything to do with the update because for me, it already didn't work before the update. Safari downloads from other websites work fine, I think Canvas changed something

Safari 13.1 contains an update that may cause issues with downloading files and displaying images in Canvas. Canvas engineers are currently working on a solution for this issue.

Hey again, no worries, happy to help out. Was it the content blockers that did it? The good news about them is you can choose to always keep them disabled for that particular site, (Or all sites if need be). So you shouldn’t have to do it every time.
