Migrating to a brand new MacMini

About to plug in a brand new MacMini. Old Mac is a mid '07 20.5" (upgraded to 4GB memory). Being replaced due to issues discussed here a couple of weeks ago. During System Restore reboot, I could not use Mac HD due to "damaged disk" & had to use a back-up Time Machine stored on the external hard drive. Should I not use the iMac in Target Mode to migrate? And just use the most current (today) back-up from the external HD?

Mac mini 2018 or later

It is actually easier, faster and more reliable to migrate from your old iMac's Time Machine backup.

No fuss, no muss, no expensive chain of adapters and no worry that the old Mac's drive will crash n' burn. Just plug the Time Machine backup drive into the new Mac during the initial setup and migrate from it, then away you go.
