Second Monitor Mac Mini 2020 M1

I cannot get my second monitor to work on my mac mini M1.

I have plugged in both monitors as the primary and both work fine. Monitors ONLY have USB-C connections. I have the second plugged into the HDMI port, then to an apple usb-c to digital av multiport adapter which is plugged into the back of the second monitor. I am getting nothing. I have plugged my TV into the HDMI port and it's fine. I have used 3 different HDMI cables and this is the second adapter I have tried.

what am I missing?

plug 1 monitor into the USB-C port...that will be your main monitor. Adapt the HDMI port into USB-C and connect your second monitor that way. It should work.

I have 2 HDMI monitors with an M1 Mac Mini. I have found that there is an issue with using the same connection type

(HDMI-HDMI) because i think apple assumes your main monitor will be plugged into Thunderbolt directly and a secondary will be plugged into HDMI directly. Once you have to adapt any ports, issues start to pop up. I have to change my Window Arrangement in Display settings when the computer wakes from sleep or when turned on from a Shut Down.

That is interesting to hear Justin. I have a Mac mini 2018 and it allows me to connect two 4K monitors via usb-c and it looked like the M1 version would force me to use HDMI for one monitor and your experience confirms this. I was surprised that the new M1 had only two usb-c ports instead of the four on the intel versions, I use two for monitors and one for another peripheral, and this put me off upgrading.

My specific issue is that I have 2 LG Ultrafine 4K displays. The only input the displays have is USB-C. The second monitor on a Mac Mini MUST come from the HDMI port. Per the apple tech support this monitor will not work as secondary because it doesn't have the power to support 2 of these specific monitors. i have purchased a cheap HDMI compatible display as my second.

I have one LG ultrafine, and an old iMac that I wanted to use as a second display.

I have been unable to find a solution that works with the M1 Mac mini.

the delock hdmi to mini DP adapter that I bought just gives me a black screen on the iMac, and while the Apple usb-c to DP adapter that I just bought does work, I sadly just now found out that it’s impossible to connect both monitors at the same time :-(

does anybody know a hdmi to mini DP adapter that actually works with an M1 Mac mini and an iMac?

You should be able to connect a Mini DisplayPort device to the M1 Mac mini HDMI port using this HDMI to DisplayPort converter

http://www.foinnex.com/pd.jsp?id=309#_pp=175_3141

and a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adapter.

The Foinnex converter has a USB cable to provide power to the converter in case the Mac mini does not provide enough power via HDMI.

Make sure you have updated to macOS 11.1
