The ends of the lines tend to jump to some reference point. This is not always helpful.
Thus, I cannot draw a line at the angle that I want. (I can by making it very long, but then the length is not what I want).
Is there some way to fix a line at the desired angle, perhaps then adjust length without the line takimg on a life of its own?

If you know the angle at which you want the line to slope, you can do this.
Click the Shapes button and choose the line option.
With the line selected, click the Format brush to open the Format Inspector, and choose Arrange.
In the Arrange panel, replace the 45 in the Angle box with 0. This will rotate your line into the horizontal orientation.
To set the length of your line:
*Pressing the shift key will increase the distance that objects move with each tap of an arrow key. When duplicating an object (by selecting the object, then pressing command-D), pressing shift-left arrow once and shift-up arrow once will place the duplicate in exactly the same screen position as the original.
