Printers compatible with Big Sur

Does anyone know where I can find a list of printers compatible with Big Sur? Have just updated OS and old printer no longer supported. When I shop for a new printer, none list Big Sur as compatible OS.

If your printer stops working after an operating system upgrade, please understand. it is not a matter of whether Big Sur is comparable with any printer. It is a matter of whether of (1) whether your manufacturer (HP) has updated their driver software for the model printer you have, and (2) whether you have downloaded and installed that driver. Such printer software updates are commonly needed after an operating system upgrade. That's something to keep in mind for future reference.

Hi,

The Samsung Xpress M2880FW is mentioned in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a printer supporting the driverless AirPrint technology.

The HP article https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05635968 could perhaps be of some interest (also see the question How do I scan with AirPrint?).

I am sorry you are having printer problems. If you will bear with me, I will offer some things to consider. Whenever we install an operating system upgrade or some OS updates, printers and scanners will often stop working. Then a new OS compliant printer driver must be installed. This is not unusual. Experience has shown that many printer manufacturers are very slow to provide the needed updated drivers. Drivers for some older printers are never provided. (Apparently, they prefer to sell new printers.) What we as users can do is to thoroughly check the printer web site for an updated driver that works. If one is not available, then we should ask when one will be released. If that doesn't work, if the Printer has the Air Print feature, that can be used and no driver will be needed. So, to summarize, it isn't fair to blame Apple when they do not provide any printer drivers. What they do provide is the specifications for interfacing with the Apple operating system to all printer manufacturers so they can update their drivers. If you are still having problems, you need to lean on your printer manufacturer. It's their software that makes the printer work.

It is HP's responsibility to "provide a fix". Apple does not make printers, so there is no way they can provide the necessary proprietary software to run all of the many hundreds of different printer models that are out there. Plus, the code for the software is owned by the printer manufacturer. What Apple does is to provide HP and all the other printer vendors with all upcoming changes in operating systems to be released well in advance of the release dates. If HP is too busy to be bothered, that is on them and them only. Continuing to bash Apple for these printer problems solves nothing and fails to acknowledge where the responsibility lies. What we should do instead is to remember so when we purchase another printer, it will be one that is supported better.

Hi,

How is the HP LaserJet 4 Plus connected? Is a USB-to-parallel adapter connected to the parallel port, or are you using an Ethernet print server? The latter would be the best solution, allowing the printer to work on a network (for example, connected to a LAN port of a Wi-Fi router).

To begin with, it may be a good idea to reset the printing system:

You may want to try to download the (Dec 11, 2020 post date) HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS package from Apple at https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US . Open the dmg file and install the package. Check whether it contains an HP LaserJet 4 Plus (19.13) driver, mentioned in the supported printer models article (Printer and scanner drivers for Mac - Apple Support). Otherwise, you could possibly use another HP LaserJet 4, 5, or 6 driver. A generic PCL driver should also be OK.

Hi,

Also, the HP ENVY Photo 7164 All-in-One Printer is mentioned in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a printer supporting the driverless AirPrint technology. This means that it can be used without special drivers.

According to Add a printer on Mac - Apple Support: "If your printer is AirPrint-enabled, it’s compatible with macOS."

Drivers/software from a printer manufacturer may or may not add functionality.

Hi,

The specifications (https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-envy-6455e-all-in-one-printer) indicate that this is an AirPrint model, so it should not be necessary to install drivers if the printer is used on the same network (Wi-Fi router) as the computer. It should also be possible to print from an iPhone/iPad.

please stop making assumptions. this is false information. There is a GIANT problem of incompatibility with Big Sur print drivers-- none of the HP printers are compatible, Lexmark printers aren't compatible, many others too.

It's extraordinarily disappointing that less-than-3 year old models and even CURRENT models do not have native driver support in Mac OS Big Sur.

Airprint is a sh*tty and SLOW technology that has always been SLOW and is way too SLOW to get real printing done on.

Brother's iPrint & Scan app is a joke.

this is a giant disaster and has caused me personally weeks and weeks of headaches and lost productivity in 2021.

Apple needs to take accountability for their mistakes here or be held accountable by a regulatory agency. This is a very serious problem and has not received nearly enough attention.

As of Sept 2021 there simply are no laser printers available on the market that I can find (in stock!) that are compatible with Big Sur. That's a disaster. If you don't see what a disaster this take a pause and take a head-check and try to put yourself in our shoes.

Stop defending Apple and HP and Brother.

I have a HP LaserJet 1012 Black and white Laser no problem printing with Big Sur. The HP Color Jet Pro MFP M477fnw is another story says file corrupt no matter how I try to set up and it is prints from my iPad fine and that is Air print supported. Some one posted an update printer driver for Big Sur I tried the link - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888?viewlocale=en_US got an error message. Does anyone have a link that works? I thought if I could find the file would give that one a try? But why does a printer I know to be over 10 years old works and the newer printer not work? Thanks, macmikeal (at) Mac (dot) com. Right now I am having to take the file I need to print put it on a thumb drive taking to pardon the cussing but Windows 11 and using the Color Jet and printing it through it no problem.
