Transferring data from old iPhone and Apple ID to new iPhone and new Apple ID

Hi there,

I have an iPhone 7 and just upgraded to the iPhone 12 mini.

I would like to start (semi) afresh with the 12 mini by using a different Apple ID but transferring some of the important data from my 7 tied to my current Apple ID.

The reason for this is because my current Apple ID has become too cluttered with data I mostly don't need and the email address is one I no longer use.

There are only two things I want to migrate to the new iPhone and Apple ID account, my photos (around 70GB) and WhatsApp data (around 15GB).

I have tried looking into various ways of doing this but not sure which is the best option.

One option I have seen is backing up my data on the current Apple ID to iCloud, signing in to the Apple ID on the new iPhone, downloading the data to the device, then sign out [of the current Apple ID] and sign in again with the new Apple ID and choosing to merge the data.

Another I have thought of, which seems the most seamless option, is using Quick Start to transfer the data and then sign out [of the current Apple ID] and sign in again with the new Apple ID and choosing to merge the data.

Will either of these options work and if I choose the Quick Start option, will the data remain on my iPhone 7 after transferring to the new iPhone? Can I choose which data to transfer to the new iPhone from iCloud?

I signed in to original Apple ID on the 12 and downloaded all the photos from iCloud onto the device.

I tried following the recommendations offered by Winston in the thread you provided a link to, however, when I try to sign out of iCloud on the 7 (I want to try it on this first to be safe before the 12) I get a prompt saying the photos will be removed from the phone (see attached photo).

I have managed to set up the 12 with all the photos from iCloud to the device. If I now sign out of the current Apple ID will the photos stay on the device? And what will happen when I sign in with a different ID?

Exactly what portion was unhelpful?

I also noticed a discrepancy between the amount of storage of photos on my phone and iCloud.

My phone shows 80.72 GB taken up in storage and 70.9 GB on iCloud. When checking on iCloud.com on a quick glance it does appear as if all the photos are backed up, including those in the hidden folder, although I have over 30,000 photos on my phone so I can't verify that completely

Are photos saved in my Hidden folder (around 3,000) the reason for difference in storage amounts?

Try following the directions from a computer -- login to www.icloud.com from a computer browser with one ID, download the data to the computer, then logout of iCloud. Login again with new ID, upload the data from computer to that ID.

I took the plunge and signed out of my Apple ID on the 7 and the Photos that [that had been downloaded] remained on the device.

What will happen when I sign in with the new Apple ID I wish to use? If there are no photos associated with this account [on iCloud], will it replace the photos on the device or will it give me the option to merge them?

I should also add, I would like retain the photos in the albums they’re in, if possible.

By merge, I meant backing up the photos to iCloud on the new Apple ID.

When you sign in with the new ID (on the device), you will see an option on whether you wish to merge these photos (on the device) with that ID you just used to sign in.
