4th Gen 2020 M1 Mac mini bluetooth issues with Magic Mouse2

Just got the brand new Mac mini (M1, 2020 8gb and 256gb - macOS big sur 11.0.1). The bluetooth connection between my Magic Mouse 2 and the mini drops during use (2-3 times an hour). The drop is very odd too - it always drops twice in quick fashion (it drops, I wiggle the mouse and click, it reconnects then immediately drops where I wiggle/click again and it connects for a longer period of time).

I worked with apple support who had me remove the plist files, but after rebooting I ran into the same issues. Any advice?

I have the mini connected via usb c cable to my acer 27" monitor. I use the same mouse, keyboard, monitor, and cable to connect to my 2018 MacBookpro 13 (Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7) and have never had issues. I even plugged in the MacBookpro after getting my mini to see if it was happening there again - nope. It's only the mini.

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

I may have "fixed" the issue with the Magic Mouse disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly. System Preferences/Bluetooth/Advanced...uncheck "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer". The issue was happening all morning (and since I received the M1 Mac Mini) and has stopped since I unchecked the box. I am using a USB Keyboard, so that is how I will wake from sleep. So far, so good though.

Ugh, I had a back-track today. I was scheduled for a call back from the senior advisor I was working with, but she didn't call. After an hour I called in and was connected to a new senior advisor. This new person had no idea what was going on, and had no familiarity with the issue. Once I explained to her that the mouse keeps disconnecting and I'm now on my second mini, she was certain that the mouse would be the problem. I explained that I used the mouse with my intel MacBook for weeks as I waited on my second mini to arrive and I had no issues, but she didn't seem to care. She has ordered a replacement mouse for me, which should be here Wednesday. I guess it's worth a try, and I won't complain about a free mouse, but I emailed my original advisor back asking her to reschedule our call.

one thing that I experienced over the last 24 hours with my Mac mini M1 that had these Bluetooth issues - When I unlocked my iPhone it immediately caused the Bluetooth devices to disconnect. I even tried this with the iPhone in another room to see if it was Bluetooth interference - same result.

I restarted the iPhone and it stopped doing this. I am going to experiment further. Seems like this is a handoff related issue amongst others. Seems like there are varying problems from the discussions in this thread.

note that this issue was not a problem unlocking my iPad Pro - only the iPhone.

A restart did the trick for me too.

I might need to try aeroplane mode if it's back. (or when...)

When I turned it all off, I noticed that I was running on LTE. I even turned WiFi off on the Mac Mini but to no avail.

So essentially I was experiencing these issues with only bluetooth enabled on the Mac Mini (no WiFi) and WiFi, Handoff and Bluetooth off on the iPhone.

HA! I pressed on the control center in the menu bar, nothing happened, but as soon as I clicked on "sound" everything started to lag for 10 seconds - much like the behavior I had with the iPhone waking up!

You must report it to Apple by opening a case. The advisor told me today that as long as people keep opening cases and escalating them there's a good chance the engineering team will respond.

as i've mentioned in previous posts Ive gone from a state of disconnects every 3mins (which as you can imagine drove me completely nuts and i nearly thew the machine out the window) to the point now I get 1 disconnect per week.

what has changed you say: nothing much.

I tried all the solutions that were mentioned in this post and some helped (turn WiFi off being the best one...it now turned back on). Ive turned off any local BT devices...no change. I also upgraded to BigSur 11.2...not sure how much that helped or not.

But in essence...as far as I know (other than 11.2) Im back with the same setup that i had when i originally had all the issues. so go figure that out!! But im happy not to have disconnects every 2-3 mins...down to 1 week. Just what changed...ive no idea.

BTW I'm in regular connect with a Apple engineer who is taking all my SYSDIAGNOSE files and history of the issues. seems this thread has gained their attention in a big way over the past week or so. (27 pages and counting!!)

Here is a summary of things I have tried:

  • Erased/Re-installed macOS
  • Factory reset all apple bluetooth devices
  • Reset bluetooth module
  • Disabled FileVault
  • Disabled Handoff (on all devices with my Apple ID)
  • Replaced the mini with a new M1 Mac Mini
  • Used only 5 GHz Wi-Fi
  • Disabled Wi-Fi (turned it off, not just disconnected)
  • Connected mouse back to an Intel Mac for 2 weeks (no issues at all during that time)

None of that helped. Mouse still disconnects/reconnects. Today Apple sent me a new Magic Mouse 2, with the theory that since the mouse was acting up on two different Mini's, it must be the mouse. They ignored the fact that its fine with Intel Macs. So now I'm waiting for the new mouse to show the same behavior. It shouldn't be long.....

Oh, also the Senior Advisor I was working with at Apple has abandoned me. We had a call scheduled for last Saturday, and she didn't call back. I called in (which is when a new person decided I needed a new mouse) and left a message, and have sent two emails since then - no reply. She told me her weekend was Thurs-Fri last week, so she should have been in the office this entire time.

Actually, this is the second time I've had an issue like this that they can't figure out, and the Senior Advisor just ghosted me. The first one is where some of my calendar events don't sync to the Apple Watch calendar (don't ask - we've been through 3 watches, 5 watchOS updates, and I've just decided to live with it).

Of course it is only one users experience but originally I did have exactly the same experience reported here which was constant disconnects of keyboard trackpad and issues with my Bluetooth headset. I reset my Bluetooth but using the terminal command as well as the built-in reset and I also then again deleted the Bluetooth P list file. Since then everything is working and I am using both ethernet and wireless. So either the issues I had were not stemming from the same issue, whatever that is or there is something else going on. What they could be I have no idea. But at the moment everyone of my devices is working perfectly. That said, I occasionally get a brief disconnect in the trackpad but it only lasts a couple of seconds.

Thanks, I've ordered that model as I couldn't find the IOGEAR one. I'll post back here with my results.

For reference: At the moment, I'm using a Magic Mouse 2 and a wired Apple Keyboard from an old iMac. Also connected is a bluetooth speaker which doesn't encounter any drops or lagginess. The mouse is occasionally laggy but most frequent issue is dropping of connection — connection first freezes, then drops and reconnects twice in quick succession.

Things which I have tried but haven't worked:

—Reseting bluetooth module or factory resetting mouse

—Turning off 2.4ghz Wifi

—Moving keyboard USB connection between ports (including a USB-C adaptor)

—Updating to Mac OS Beta2 11.2

—Disabling Handoff in Apple Watch and iPhone

—Moving the position of the Mac and the desk itself away from neighbour's wall!

This will end up bad... My Company bought some more than 70 Mac Minis M1, 16 GB, 1TB as replacements for old iMacs for our Marketing- and Advertising Department, complete with Apple Keyboards and Magic Mouses 2. This morning they decided to send all of these machines back. It just is close to impossible to do productive Work with them with the Mouse disconnecting all the time and the keyboard lagging. They postponed the decision when someone found an Article about 11.2 addressing the problem, but when it does not, those machines will be declared defective and sent back to Apple. Interesting that there still is no giant Shitstorm about this.

As there were many technical questions asked here just to be complete:

All machines were connected via USC C to an LG 43" Monitor. Switching some of them to HDMI did not help. Also most machines are cabled to Ethernet, only a Haldfull is connected via a 5Ghz Wlan... They all behave the same. Several machines are together in a room, others are in alone in a single Bureau, so it also should not be them affecting each other. It just simply does not work. Mouses disconnect several times every hour, Keyboard Lag happens not so often, but when it does, it is a problem for up to a Minute sometimes where it is several seconds until the Mac receives what you type and/or the last pressed key is sent to the machine until you press another key... which often takes seconds to be possible again.

Howard O. (eclecticlight.co) is a long time Mac writer and technical expert. He posted an article in his blog to assist us in analyzing the cause(s) if our bluetooth problems. See https://eclecticlight.co/2021/01/23/bluetooth-utilities-to-help-diagnose-disconnections/ . The article may give us some new ways to look at our problem.

He lists three tools which offer Bluetooth diagnosis capabilities of Apple's Bluetooth Explorer has already been mentioned in this thread (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252078550?answerId=254324698022#254324698022). Apple Bluetooth Explorer is free to download with an Apple Developer account.

Searching again, actually I see only a handful of items with this error but definitely all in connection with BT disconnects. It would be great if others with this problem could download Bluetooth Explorer and confirm:

https://download.developer.apple.com/Developer_Tools/Additional_Tools_for_Xcode_12/Additional_Tools_for_Xcode_12.dmg

When you run the dmg file, you will see BT explorer.
