I just purchased a new macbook pro. I am now home setting it up and am in the process of migrating my info from my previous mac. I suddenly got worried because my old macbook had viruses on it and don’t want those to transfer to new mac. Is there something I need to do before I continue migrating everything over?

I would not worry about "viruses" on your other mac...
The most trouble free way to move to a new machine, is using the Setup Assistant on the initial boot— you have one shot here. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205749
If that opportunity has past, the second best way is use the Migration Assistant.
