Airplane Mode vs. Security

Hypothetical: Let's say that someone takes/steals an iPhone and then keeps it in airplane mode for an undetermined timeframe. This will no doubt render the iPhone to be 'offline'. This is understood. However, what would be the point of the 'remote wipe' option built into 'find my iPhone' within iCloud? One would think that Apple designed the phone to 'fail safe' in some sense so that the device could still be wiped for security and peace of mind, correct? Just curious. Thoughts?

The remote wipe in Find My iPhone will activate as soon as the individual connects the iPhone to the internet. Not every one takes the time to put the device into Airplane Mode. Many turn them off, remove the SIM, etc. There are multiple ways to render Find My iPhone disabled. But if the individual attempt to wipe the phone to activate it in their name, then it will wipe, or if they turn it on to try to get something from it it will wipe. It serves a purpose.
