Updating operating system & Aperture

I need to update my operating system on my Mac. Still using High Sierra. What if anything will happen to my photos in Aperture?

If you upgrade to Mojave, you'll still be able to use Aperture.

If you upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur, launch Photos with the Option key held down, click on Other Library, and choose the Aperture one. Alternatively, switch to a non-Apple product.

In either case, back up your data before upgrading.

So you can choose what operating system you want to update too? I always thought it updated to the most recent one.

Yes. If you don't wish to upgrade to Big Sur, check your applications for compatibility, and download Mojave or Catalina.
