Mac crashes frequently after Big Sur upgrade

Several days after I upgraded my iMac Pro 27" 2017 (3GHz 10-Core 64 RAM) to Big Sur, (11.0.1) it started crashing frequently (once or twice a day). It's not just one application; the whole computer crashes and restarts. It seems to happen at a random time; I cannot pinpoint any particular application or action that seems to trigger it.

I'm wondering if other users of iMac Pro are experiencing similar problems or if it's just me. Can anyone think of a reason that this is happening? Before Big Sur, the iMac Pro never used to crash at all, but now it's happening daily.

With the help of two senior Apple advisors, I narrowed the cause of original crashes down to some corruption in the System Library folder (not User Library folder) and its incompatibility with Firefox. I was getting ready for clean install in order to wipe the System Library folder clean and solve the problem.

Then Big Sur 11.1 came along, and I upgraded to it. Since the upgrade more than two weeks ago, it has not crashed once. So I assume the upgrade to 11.1 overwrote whatever corrupt file I had in my System Library folder and thereby solved the problem.

I realize that this is not the cause of other people's problems with frequent crashes after upgrade to Big Sur, because some report that clean install did not solve the problem and others report never using Firefox to begin with. So this is just a solution to MY particular problem of frequent crashes after Big Sur. I hope at least some other people experiencing the problem can solve it by upgrading to 11.1.

The way I get around the System Crash Problem with Multiple Monitor is I disconnect them from the Thunderbolt 2 Ports before I issue the Lock Screen Command. This way I know the system won't crash. It is a pain to keep connecting and disconnecting them which is why I just leave them disconnected if I am doing a small amount of work. I have pushed my time the Monitors Go to Sleep to 1 Hour, I used to have it set to sleep after 20 Minutes.

I hope Apple Fixes the problem soon as well but I am not counting on it.

I have an iMac 27 Late 2015 and discovered that the screens were not refreshing properly after the crash, it didn't matter if the Monitors were DVI or DisplayPort the same result happened.

I decided not to hook up the monitors and let the computer go in to sleep mode as usual and it woke up just fine and unlocked properly with my Apple Watch rather than giving me the crash report.

I have submitted the Crash Reports to Apple and I have not heard back from them.

What computer are you using and what Display Adaptors if any do you have hooked up to it?

I have a brand new iMac 27"..just got it right before Thanksgiving so it came preloaded with Big Sur. I have been having crashes as well. WTH is going on with Apple? Have they even commented on the issue at all? Nothing on the web from Apple, just people like you and I and forums like this.

I will be setting up an appt with Apple Care come Mon...let's see if they can resolve this..I paid way too much $$$ to have to worry about a crash while I am in the middle of a mix session.

Big Sur on my 2018 15" MBPro has been a recurring nightmare for the past two months. I cannot isolate the source of the problem. I've tried everything BUT a clean install. After 30+ years of relying on Apple products, I'm sorely tempted for the first time to switch to my Win10 computer as the main machine until this OS is stabilized. In my experience as a daily user of many Macs since System 6, this is by far the least stable OS they have ever released.

Woke my 2018 Mac Mini from sleep today and discovered that it had hard crashed once again. I recently updated to 11.1 and was hoping that would fix the issue, but nope. This hasn't been an issue on my 2017 MacBook Air running Big Sur, but this Mac Mini has been problematic since I bought it at the beginning of 2020 (display issues, I'm on my 3rd logic board w/ no resolution). I did buy AppleCare, but honestly at this point I'm so frustrated that I may give up on the Mini and use my Ubuntu box (which is rock solid of course) as my primary desktop computer instead. I have not experienced anything like this since I switched to Mac in 2007 and the reason I switched then from Windows was due to issues not entirely dissimilar to what I'm experiencing now.

What is Apple doing about this? Have they even addressed the issue in any way shape or form? I was on a chat call with Apple about this very issue. I asked the person if they where working on the issue and they informed me that they were not aware of the crash issue! I told them about the tread here..no response.

I just bought a brand new 8core iMac 27" 5K with Logic Pro x and pre-loaded with Big Sur. I have had more crashes in the last 6 weeks than I ever did in the last 20 plus years of owning Macs. I paid a heft amount of $$$ and I am seriously unsatisfied.

To say I am disappointed is an understatement.

Is there a way to downgrade to Catalina?

Will an Apple Tech support person PLEASE CHIME IN?

My iMac is set to not sleep. That isn't the issue, but I do appreciate your advice.

Now my iMac is launching Music and Siri for no reason. I turned off Siri last week but just today it started back up again. I had to go into Preferences and disable it yet again. Now Music launches and immediately starts playing the last song I listened to. This happened today in the middle of a mix session..not cool. In addition, there is a file taking up 7.7 gb in the trash that I cannot delete. I tried everything.."Delete Immediately", the terminal, made sure the permissions were good and that the file is not locked..I tried renaming it. Nothing. It sits there in the trash.

For the 1st time in over 30 yrs of using Apple computers and being an advocate of the Apple brand, MacOS, and their ironclad stability/security, I am regretting spending the money I did for my iMac. I had no choice with the os..it came preloaded with Big Sur. I am seriously considering downgrading to Catalina but I do not want to void my Apple Care.

And not a peep from Apple about Bug Sur issues. I chatted with Apple Care last week explaining my issues. I mentioned the forums here and how other people are having big issues with Big Sur..it's all over the internet. They told me that they "were not aware of any such issues.". WTH?

And with the Apple Stores closed in my area due to Covid, I can't speak to anyone face to face about this.

Hurry up Apple..get this sorted out....don't let us down. Steve may be gone but the Apple name should mean something still.

Same here 16 inch - talked to Apple and they guided me to PR-Reset which required a reboot but it did not help.

Considering a reinstall without timemachine restore but hoping that Apple will do something before I get that far.

I too feel that it was caused by Firefox but not sure.

I have sent many software failure reports - I wonder if apple looks at those?

I’ve tried to update from Mojave OS to Big Sur 3 times, and 3 times my MacBook Air has crashed and I’ve had to erase my mac and start from the beginning aka High Sierra and then back up to Mojave. I’ve read many tutorials on the issue, texted with Apple tech support and even talked on the phone with Apple tech support for 3 hours! I’m beginning to think that the Big Sur OS has many flaws and that it’s not worth upgrading to. I don’t think the 4th time will be any different and I will have to live with the Mojave OS until a newer OS after Big Sur will be made available, that is unless an Apple associate has an exact answer for me as to why Big Sur is such a Big Fail! I am Truly dissatisfied and disappointed with Apple. And it’s not just Apple, all of these big tech companies are pumping out faulty products in order for the consumer to spend more of their hard-earned money to upgrade in as little as 2 years for the new and improved product. I switched over from a pc to an Apple thinking they were different. NOPE! Apple products are just as overpriced and disappointing as the next tech company. $200 computer, $2000 computer, they are all built to crash in as little as two years after they’re built. BIG SUR IS A BIG FAIL APPLE!!! Stop charging so much money for your faulty products!

TRY HARDER!!!🤬 DO BETTER APPLE!!!🤬

I’m using a 2018 MacBook Air and I’m having the same issue after installing Big Sur last night. My whole laptop freezes up every time I open Chrome. I’ve had one black screen error already. I tried using Safari to see if it was more stable, but the same thing happened. I have had to restart 10 times already and haven’t been able to work at all! I’m so frustrated!!!

Okay, my advice is to install Catalina and not to install Big Sur. On my 2020 iMac (128GB, 10core) crashed constantly, but when I went back to Catalina I didn't have a problem. On my 2019 64gb MacBook Pro (i9) it has diminished the speed to dramatically, over other less powerful versions on previous installs are functioning faster. (much slower than when I bought it). Unless it's an M1 device I believe everyone should stay away from Big Sur. It may not make your Laptop or Desktop Crash but it will slow it down.

Side note, Big Sur has made even the M1 Laptop I am reviewing freeze.

Here is a Video I made comparing MacBook Intel vs Macbook M1 - The speed difference is pretty astonishing however the Intel MacBook Pro honestly has a weight around it's neck because of Big Sur.
