Issue
IPad updated / upgraded overnight, and not only did it need the Username / Password but this time, wanted the answers to security questions set, presumably, years ago.
We tried each combinations of:
Jane Doe, Jane, jane, jane doe
—with—
Manufacture Model, manufacture model, manufacture, Manufacture, Model, model
—Note— at this is why this is a BAD way to authenticate. Though we DO know the ‘first car’ and ‘high school friend’ the system does not, it knows the letters, in which combination we entered. There is no ‘fact checking’. So irrelevant to who was the friend you need to know exactly how you typed it.
At this point the system locked us out of the ‘identification’ stating we can not verify you.
—Note— this is NOT identification, this is authorization, the system does not know who we you are, it knows that you have the answers. Identification is the finger print reader. Only my wife has her finger prints. I can not ask her to email me her finger print, as I can username password.
With the system locking us out, we needed to call Apple.
Resolution:
—note— if this DID NOT work, the only other option was to delete the account.... more on that later.
We happened to have a older iPad that We did not try to authenticate on. On this iPad we could SWITCH to 2 factor, enter a phone number and we were all good.
PROBLEM - APPLE LISTEN TO THIS
1) They could not reset the attempts on the questions, by emailing a code.
2) They could not reset via the finger print reader (an actual identity)
3) They COULD delete the account, erase all the apps bought, email, etc.
4) They could, with no authentication beyond username password SWITCH to a NEW Phone number as authorization. No checking if the number was our’s, just text a verification code, type it in and there, we are IN.
5) While helping my Wife on this issue, the tech need to get her permission to for me to work on it. This was a SIMPLE, ‘is this .... and is it ok’ and a female voice response positive, and we are ok, just a female VOICE....
HOW can this be ok. Apple willing to delete the account, if we did not have a second APPLE iPad?
No ‘identity’ just authentication, but only using another APPLE device. There is an actual identity on the iPAD but that is not used. My biggest complaint is that the could not just RESET the attempts? WHY NOT???
For reference, in the house, we have, 6 iPads, 2 Mac Mini, 2 iMac, and 2 MacBook Pro (work provided). We obviously ‘like’ apple, and this is a disappointments.
