Two-step security set-up

In setting up two-step verification, Apple wants confirmation of my credit card number? Why does Apple want this?

It helps identify that you are the Apple ID owner. Helps verify your identity.

Thank you, Eric. I can't help wondering how Apple got my credit card number in the first place. Since they obviously have it, I suppose there is no harm in my confirming it.
