The Canon MG5420 is supported by Apple's AirPrint, and does not require any Canon drivers/software for support in Big Sur.

With the printer connected wireless/wired, and powered on, visit System Preferences : Printers & Scanners panel, and right-click on the printer icon in the Printers listing. Select Reset Print system… and the this will prompt you to re-add the printer. Choose AirPrint as the driver source, and then re-add the printer. Once again, right-click on the newly added printer icon, and make it your default printer. Print something.

The MG5200 printer does not have AirPrint. I have an MX882 which does not have have AirPrint and did not work in macOS 11.1 Big Sur. It worked fine in Catalina. See the link for AirPrint capable printers.

On a whim I downloaded Canon's last published driver for the MX882 (OS X Sierra) and installed it. The printer showed in the Add Printer list so it was added and the MX882 now prints just fine.

You might try the same approach with your MG5200.

I know its no help to you but I get the same message when trying to use my Canon TS8150 with Big Sur. It should work as it is an AirPrint connection and it did work perfectly with Catalina before I upgraded and still works perfectly with iOS and a Windows laptop. Tried everything: resetting networks, USB connection, checked up to date firmware, then reset the printing system and now BS sees my printer but won't add it - I get the same error message as you do.

My printer does however have a Wireless Direct facility and I can connect to that and then print however, as that is a separate WiFi network to my principal network I have to manually drop the principal network and connect to the printer network and then print and then reconnect to my principal WiFi network, each and every time, a real pain but for the minute it saves me being forced in to the risky business of buying a new printer which may or may not work with Big Sur.

Memo to self - don't ever ever ever upgrade the Apple OS. Always causes problems and over time you get something you can't live with.

Hello,

Canon TS8220 is mentioned in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a printer supporting the driverless AirPrint technology. This means that the printer should work with macOS 11 Big Sur without having to download a driver from the printer manufacturer.

Connect the printer to a Wi-Fi network (with a router). The computer (and any iPhones/iPads) must be connected to the same network.

If necessary, try to reset the printing system.

Make sure that AirPrint is used for the re-added printer.

A guide from Canon UK (for similar models) could possibly be of some interest:

Also, is the printer using the latest firmware?
