Are you viewing your email through the built-in Mail app? Or, are you using the Safari web browser to access your email account? Is it possible you're seeing the Split View layout on your iPad, as discussed here: Open two items in Split View on iPad - Apple Support. If so, check out the steps on how to close Split View within that article.
