my volume on my iphone 11 pro max is acting up

if it’s not on speaker I can’t hear the other person. Also if I’m on FaceTime I keep going in and out also the image that appears in place of me on the FaceTime is an exclamation point

Basically if someone calls me I won’t be able to hear them unless I put them on speaker or get some earphones but outside of that no speaker I can’t hear anything
