macbook pro m1 external monitor won't work

I have the new MacBook Pro m1 and it won't run an external monitor.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.0

Sounds like a compatibility issue between the new Mac and your dock. Perhaps try Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter.

I'm running HDMI from two different kinds of docking stations, one a full dock and the other a "HDMI dongle type"... Neither one will power my monitor on the M1, but plugging either doc into my Mac mini works just fine
