Apple Watch, series 3, GPS, Storage issues

I have a Series 3 Apple Watch and I am trying to update the software.

The watch keeps telling me it needs additional storage to update. I have removed everything and it seems nothing changed with regards to more available storage.

Online it says the Apple Watch has 8 GB with the GPS unit. Yet my "About Apple Watch" says it only has 4GB. I can only assume the storage for the OS is hidden away.

I have gone and unpaired my Apple Watch to see if I could gain anymore storage and it only seems to loose more storage space. ie went from 2.8 GB available with all my normal content on the unit to 1.9 GB available with the Apple Watch restored to factory settings.

Can anyone help me understand this one?

To Free-Up Storage

For songs, see the "Remove music from Apple Watch" section in:

Add music to Apple Watch - Apple Support

and for pictures, see the "Limit photo storage on Apple Watch section in:

Choose a photo album and manage storage on Apple Watch - Apple Support

Also, try unpairing and pairing your watch again and restoring from the backup just created in the unpairing process. This deletes all temp and corrupted files and re-indexes the file system.

Unpair and erase your Apple Watch - Apple Support
