can apple care + theft lost subscriptions be transferred from devices?

I want to purchase a new phone and trade in my iphone 8 for credit. However, I have apple care + theft lost coverage until 2028 (one time payment) on my 8. Can I get a new phone or do I have to wait? Of course I don’t really want to pay for the apple care + theft lost coverage again... but i’m guessing I have to, right?

If you pay monthly

If you make monthly payments for your AppleCare plan, the plan is linked to your Apple ID and can't be transferred to a new owner.

If you receive a replacement device

If we replace your device instead of repairing it, we’ll automatically transfer your plan to your new device. If transfer of coverage isn’t possible, we’ll offer other options.

Review the AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss insurance documents.
