macOS Catalina

I can't update my macOS since April. I have accidentally removed a folder from my Bitdefender antivirus and it's not working properly. I can't remove the antivirus either.

Could this be the reason I can't do any updates on my computer?

do we need antivirus for MacBook?

As there are no viruses that attack the mac then there is no need for anti-virus apps.

At best they just use up system resources and slow your mac down, at worst they will

often flag up files as threats which could be essential system files which you may go

ahead and delete them which will harm your mac.

The same goes for any cleaning or optimisation apps, the mac does not need them for

the same reasons. The mac looks after itself on its own.

There is malware/ adware which can be dealt with by installing,

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/ the free version will do.

What updates were you wanting to install, updates to Catalina can be downloaded

from here, Apple - Support - Downloads once downloaded double-click to install.

Always make a full backup first.

To uninstall BitDefender go to their website and look fo r uninstall instructions.

Moving from one OS like Catalina to a newer OS like Big Sur is called an upgrade.

Does your mac meet the requirements for installing Big Sur.

How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur - Apple Support

Go to Section 1 Check Compatibility and see if your mac qualifies for the upgrade.

Which Security Updates were you trying to install, as far as I am aware there are no Security Updates for Catalina

just the 10.15.7 Combo Update and the 10.15.7 Supplemental Combo Update.

And there are certainly no Security Updates for Big Sur.

So can you give more information.

Instead of trying to update through System Preferences> Software Update

try downloading the updates via the Apple Support Downloads page

as I described earlier.

Make sure your mac is connected to your router via cable not WiFi.

Start with this one,

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2052?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Once downloaded Double- click to install.

After that has been installed download this one,

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2061?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Once downloaded Double- click to install.

After you have done that then you can try upgrading to Big Sur.
