For the past 4 months I have been unable to keep my ringer volume up. Even after I raise it to its highest level, it drops down on its own and I do not hear it ring. I have consistently updated the software (IOS 14.2 is the latest I have) , and it did not work in previous updates. At the same time the ringer volume issue happened to my wife's phone (XR) as well. Any suggestions why this would happen and how to fix this problem?

Thanks for checking the Attention Aware feature. One other thing to check is to go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringer and Alerts and turn off "Change with Buttons". If this is enabled, you can inadvertently turn down the ringer volume using the volume up/down buttons. By turning this off, you have to come back to this setting to change the ringer volume.

We understand that your iPhone ringer volume lowers, often to the point that you do not hear it ring and that it is also happen on your wife's iPhone also. What you are describing sounds like the Attention Aware feature on iPhones with the TrueDepth camera. When Attention Aware is turned on, it will lower the notification volume when the camera detects that you are looking at the iPhone.
