When editing videos in FCPX random clips will turn black. All my clips are recorded with the same camera, saved to the same SD Card, and imported the same way, yet only some clips black out during editing. The clips also play fine when I open them through QuickTime or any other video playing software... all other forums relating to this issue seem to be years old and outdated.

Reboot the system without any applications. Relaunch FCP holding Opt-Cmd to reset the preferences. Open your library and wait for the system to rebuild the filmstrips and waveforms. Don’t do anything while it’s doing that. Your system is a little old and the graphics are underpowered, which can causes these type of problems.
Also GoPros can be problem files because the frame rates can be unstable. You might try optimizing the media, if you have enough drive space and are working off an SSD.

The issue is more related to the GoPro variable frame rate rather than FCP.

What camera ? What are the clips format?
Also, try deleting render files and deleting preferences.
Don’t know the Canon cameras but most iPhone video is variable frame rate and needs to be optimized.
What’s the media specs and what are the complete system specs?

Yeah, apple really need to fix that problem, I just bought FCPX and I'm already starting to regret it. I just can't find a solution
Agreed, issue is with FCPX and not solely my GoPro, because I’ve had the issue with other cameras, including canon t5i and iPhone camera
FCP Version 10.5, Mac OS Catalina V10.15.7, Recording with GoPro Hero 7, and the clips are .mp4's
