2016 iPad Pro 9.7 inch not updating to iPadOS 14

Hi, my iPad Pro 9.7 inch from 2016 isn’t updating to iPadOS 14. I do not see any error messages, and I have a lot of space left to update. After a while of it saying “preparing update,” it just stops and goes back to where I have to press “download and install.” I have backed it up and I also tried to do it on the iMac. It says that it corrupted, no error code. Help?

Despite you question being incorrectly marked as resolved, lets see what we can do to help.

First, lets start with clearing up the true facts...

Your first generation iPad Pro 9.7” does support iPadOS 14.

Here is the full compatibility list for iPadOS 14.x; you will note that your iPad is listed here:

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ipad/ipad213a25b2/ipados

If you have already downloaded a copy of the update - and it won’t install - the update file may be damaged/corrupted. You need to delete the update package - and then download a fresh copy of the update...

To delete the failed update from your iPad:

Settings > General > iPad Storage

Scroll down the list of Apps until you find the Apple Update, tap, then select Delete Update.

After deleting the update, a forced-restart of the iPad is recommended:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

After restarting, you can reattempt the OTA Update from iPad Settings:

Settings > General > Software Update

If the update continues to be problematic, these support pages may prove to be helpful with troubleshooting the problem:

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

If you see an error when you update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support

I hope this proves to be more helpful. If not, please return to the tread - where experienced contributors may be able to assist further.

I cannot answer why yours is not updating as iPads are not my area of expertise, but I do know that I just updated mine (same model as yours) successfully. iPadOS is supported on all iPad Pro models including the 2016. Not having enough RAM is not correct. Neither does it have anything to do with being too “powerful”. If you will google for supported devices, it is definitely listed.

The only thing I can think of is that you may not enough empty space - it needs more than 4 GB for the download and then some for expansion during the install. You should have at least 10 GB available. Also, I always download/install via iTunes or Finder depending on the Mac OS I am running. I feel it just works without a glitch. Have you tried that?

In the meantime, hopefully one of our iPad gurus will chime in with an idea.

Ohh... sorry. Every article about iOS 14.2 keeps saying “Old Gen iPad’s from 2016 or earlier are not capable of having 14.2”. I’m gettin confused now ╮( ̄▽ ̄"")╭ (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)

Sorry, but would you translate the hieroglyphics at the end of your post. These forums are not social media or chats and we have users/volunteers from around the world with English being a second language. That is difficult enough.

Well, thanks, but as I said these are English user support forums; although we are from around the world, there are forums for a few other languages. But, in essence, these are English language forums and it is best to respond in a way that is beneficial for the majority of users without needing to guess. This is not social media.
