I am being asked to double tap side button to confirm App purchase. This doesn't work - just turns my ph off!!! Searches say to go via Accessibility to disable and choose to toggle on 'use password' - it doesn't have that option. Can someone please tell me (in basic steps please :-)) how to go back to the original put your Apple ID password in to confirm a purchase from the App Store? Many thanks in advance.

I believe the search results you are finding refer to a setting that existed in iOS 13, but does not in iOS 14. No idea why they removed it, I think they maybe replaced it with Switch Control? (I have not played with that yet)
My guess is that you are not clicking twice in quick enough succession.
So on that note, there is something that you could try.. If you go to Settings > Accessibility > Side Button and look at the Click Speed settings. Yours is probably set to Default. Try changing it to Slow or Slowest and see if it helps you get a double click. When you change the setting, it vibrates to show you the speed that you would need to click.
You could also try going to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and turning off the switch for iTunes and App Store. I think that might just allow you to enter your password.
