Hello G Anderson,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! From your message we understand you have been unable to use your iPad mini 5th generation with your new Mac mini unless it is connected via a cable.

Since it is working when connected with a cable, this tells us that the devices can work with Sidecar. The following information can be found in the Use your iPad as a second display for your Mac with Sidecar article under, "Sidecar system requirements > Additional requirements" section:

"To use Sidecar wirelessly, both devices must be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other and have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff turned on. Also make sure that the iPad is not sharing its cellular connection and the Mac is not sharing its Internet connection."

Once you have ensured that all the settings are as expected, if you're still unable to connect wirelessly, try restarting both devices. We look forward to hearing the results.

All the best.
