Apple remote is not working.

I want to know why my Apple remote is not working.

Does it need a charge?

I see holes at end of the thin remote but I'm not sure whether they are for charging or whether the normal charger for my iPhone 8 can be used to charge the Apple TV REMOTE.  

Other Apple web pages does not have a support page or address the remote
