I have an 1st Generation iPad Pro A1584 - it says in Settings 'Software Update' but when I try to do that it says my software is up to date at 10.1.1 ios. Is this correct? Can I not upgrade to iPadOS14?

I spent a lot of time with Apple yesterday (1 hour) on their support Chat line and apparently there is no hope for my VERY expensive A1584 iPad Pro 12.9 inch to be upgraded as they call it PRE 1st Generation. So it seems it will forever be stuck on version 10.1.1. Eventhough I have a red dot on General Settings Software Upgrade saying to upgrade it. When I press this I get the message 'Your software is up to date. Version 10.1.1.
It seems I was too early buying into 1st Generation iPad and this iPad A1584 is PRE 1st Generation - and does not have the ability to be upgraded further than 10.1.1 ;-( VERY SAD.
Unless this is a lot of BS from Apple, they are not going to investigate it further.
Pays not to be a 'early adopter'.

This is the first time, in many years, that I have heard about a PRE version of an iPad, which however has a model code (A1584) the same as that used for the "official" version of the iPad Pro 1st generation (on which, as it appears in all lists, such iPad supports the current iPadOS 14).
But I'm not an Apple technician, I'm just a user like you, and this information leaves me speechless. I am truly sorry for this, and I did not even imagine that this was possible.

I have owned iPad since the first model came out in 2010. I have never heard of a Pre release iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. I would demand to speak to someone higher up in the chain of command at Apple Support.
What part of the world do you live in and where did you purchase the iPad?
