Iphone 4: problems with hanging up screen goes black during live calls..

There are too many problems to list them all but the main problem I am having is:
During a live call the screen stays black unlike the 3g when u take it away from your ear the 3g's screen will come back on to allow you to use keyboard or end call etc....With my Iphone 4 now while trying to hang up the screen goes totally black and I cannot use the end call button....I try to hit the sleep on off button and it freezes the whole phone up and the phone lock slider is frozen after every call, In other words I have to wait for the other party to hang up because I can't hit end call. It is annoying! What happens when I need to use keyboard during calls??? The screen stays black while on a call????
Is there a fix for this???

iphone 4, Windows XP

Sounds like the reverse issue of the proximity sensor issue people are having.
It thinks you still have it to your face.
Either you have a bad sensor, or you have it in a case that is either poorly designed or is not made for the iPhone 4 since they moved the location of the sensor and an older case could be keeping it covered.

Both my sister and I just upgraded to iPhone 4(16) and we both have terrible problems with the screen blanking during phone calls. Once it goes black, it is difficult and problematic trying to get control back. Since both our phones are brand new I don't think either one is defective unless they all are. This behavior is intolerable and we don't see how anyone can live with this. You can't hang up, or answer a call waiting, or activate the speakerphone. Making phone calls is the most basic function of the phone and it is hard to take that we are having trouble doing that. Time to call AppleCare I guess.

Are we doing something dumb, or is this troubling other peopl also?

i'm having this problem as well. seems like the proximity sensor thinks that my face is still there when its not. it wont turn the screen back on until the call has ended and i go back to lockscreen. doesn't have this issue if i answer the phone using earpiece thou.

i did hear that it may be because of a restore when you first set up the phone.
anyone set it up as a new phone and still have this issue? this way we can eliminate a bad restore as the cause.

I've been having this problem and of course, never asked Applecare about it before it expired. Duh, me. It also has nothing to do with a case such as an Otterbox and I know this becuase I've had my 3GS in it since day one. Very frustrating not being able to access the end call button or the keypad. Trying to pay bills by phone, forget it. I flip my iPhone over again and again, shake it, slap it, it will light up for a split second and blah. The best solution I've found to avoid this irritating problem is when I'm paying bills I'll put it on speakerphone right away and open the keypad. It doesn't solve the problem but it keeps me from getting ****** at my phone having to listen to the automated vocie from the cable/insurance/electric company repeat itself!
