Mac Mini m1 bluetooth problems

Hi, I just got the new Mac mini M1 and from day one I have had big problems with the bluetooth connection. The computer is within an arms reach and has problems staying connected to my Magic Keyboard. It turns on and off. Several times. I even tried placing the keyboard on top of the Mini with out any difference. Some times I have to connect a wired keyboard just to log in. Sometimes the Magic Mouse also has problems. When using both with my old MacBook Pro 2010 they work perfectly.

There is nothing connected to the Mac mini other the the power and there is no ruter nearby that could interfere. The keyboard has fresh batteries also.

It looks like others also have this problem. Is there any one that has a fix. This is really frustrating.

Best regards

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

Thank you once again. But... Again, you are missing the point...

Your examples are describing clearly defined and repeateable hardware defects in third party (i.e. non Apple) equipment.

This is all to do with an entirely Apple "system" that is sometimes fully working (i.e. no apparent defects), which then displays very erratic behaviour which is sometimes inconsistent from one person's system to another.

If you take the time to read back all of the previous pages on this, you will see that many have replaced equipment:

  • Some have replaced keyboards - to no effect.
  • Many have replaced mice - to no effect.
  • Some have even replaced Mac mini's - to no effect.
  • Some have got success by turning off Wifi - but this is not a solution, it just hides the underlying problem.
  • Some have found success by forcing the systems to use 5GHz wifi - but again, this is not a cure for the problem - It's just using a '"workaround" to avoid running into the problem. And not everyone may be able to force 5GHz.
  • Some have even completely reset their systems and Yahoo! it all works - for about two the three days - and then it stops working again.

All of these "helpful" suggestions, to plug it in, to use something else etc., are a bit like suggesting I use the back seat of my car to carry luggage, simply because the central locking system will not open the trunk.

What we all need, is for the basic functionality to be met. And to do that, Apple must first acknowledge that their users have a problem, that the problem can be described and can be reproduced. Then - hopefully - the problem can be determined and fixed.

Honestly, Apple must think either their staff or their customers or both are idiots. I love the products etc but let's face it if they don't monitor this forum that would be ridiculous and pretending they don't know about an issue but fix it anyway is nonsense.

I sent an M1 MacMini back because of the BT issue and it looks like many others have too so even if they didn't monitor the forum they know because of the machines being sent back for a refund. Pretending they are infallible isn't a good look when its clear there are issues they know about.

Hoping this update does sort it our because I really would like to reorder

So mine is still working well after this latest update (RC 3) with no disconnects of my mouse, except now my Apple Watch is not unlocking my Mac Mini again. Briefly shows the unlocking notification and then doesn't. Really irritating as with RC 2 it worked great.

Tried all the suggestions on the internet to get the unlock working again but no luck.

Anyone got a magic solution?

I had the watch and ios beta but they both have now had a regular update so that is what I was/am on. They didn't help.

Now the funny thing is I was getting fed up so was going to try an app called "Near Lock". Installed it on all three devices and was doing the setup on my Mac Mini and one of the steps it did was clearing bluetooth caches. Got it all installed and was trying to get it to work but then decided to check my regular apple watch unlock and it was working again. Maybe the way that app cleared the caches fixed it? I left that app on my mac but took it out of the login items so it doesn't start on startup.

Restarted and apple watch unlock is still working.

Mouse and keyboard still working fine with zero disconnects.

The 11.2 update worked for about a day. The problem is now back, keyboard losing connection, keys getting "sticky" and super slow. For me it boils down to Bluetooth headphones, either the Airpods Pro or my old Bose QC. Whenever I use them for a while the problem is back within minutes. It usually begins with the keyboard losing connection. It reconnects and then the problem is back until I turn off the headphones again.

I'm considering getting a wired keyboard and mouse as well. If I can find one. It's frustrating, I am able to replicate the bug so Apple should be able to as well. I can type fine, I turn on the Bluetooth headphones and within seconds my keyboard just gives up, both slow and replicating keystrokes like the Bluetooth module is buffering or something. I'm a professional artist so I mostly use the keyboard for shortcuts and stuff but even picking a color in Photoshop slows the process down to a crawl.

Here's to all us early adopters, cheers!

I’ve been running 11.3 with very little issues, I remember when I got my original M1 Mac mini and it would become unusable as the Bluetooth would just crash and the Bluetooth settings would freeze.

With 11.3 I’ve noticed rarely that the keyboard and mouse delay when connecting, I think it has happens twice.

It’s getting a lot better, I think Apple needs to adjust power management.

My first two original M1 Mac mini’s were:

8GB Ram 256GB Ssd

My current is:

16GB Ram 1TB Ssd m

Some say that the 16GB Ram versions have less issues but I don’t think so.

11.2.2 as of this morning. Had no Bluetooth connection after doing the reset Bluetooth devices to factory reset suggestion. Had to dig our old USB keyboard and mouse to get it back. Working for the moment will wait and see if it still goes bad after awhile. Note that there was nothing in the 11.2.2 update that indicated it had a fix for the Bluetooth problem.

Just recently had a problem with my magic mouse not connecting upon waking from sleep mode. On the latest firmware Big Sur 11.2.2 on a M1 Mac Mini. Apple bluetooth keyboard connected though. Got a spare mouse and tried to turn bluetooth off and then back on but the toggle to turn it off wouldn't respond. Restarted the Mac and when it rebooted bluetooth was off. Turned bluetooth back on and everything connected as normal.

This is the only time I've experienced a problem with bluetooth since turning off Wi Fi. Seems to coincide with having updated the firmware recently.
