dmg file no longer asks for password to open

I created a .dmg file via Disk Utility several months ago. When I clicked on the filename (***.dmg) the folders and files in it immediately opened without my being prompted for a password.

  1. Why does this happen?
  2. And is there a way to add a password to protect this .dmg file without starting all over?

Any help appreciated.

Hi neark,

We see from your post that you’ve created a disc image file, but see it is not password protected. We're happy to assist.

To get started, during the initial creation of the disc image, you're given an option to encrypt the image, selecting that option is what allows you to create a password on the dmg file. At this time there is not an option to add a password to an already existing dmg file.

See more info about creating disc images in the article below.

Take care.
