should apple be responsible for disposal of activation locked devices?

i can't remember my password
i can't find the receipt
i bought it from a cat

Activation Lock is a good thing - until it isn't.

Customer service is unable to help me dispose of this product.

Please provide an option to responsibly dispose of these locked/bricked devices.

These are user to user forums so we do not provide recycling. You are not addressing Apple here. Activation lock is a theft deterrent.

Surely you can find a place where you can recycle electronics somewhere near you? If not, take it to an Apple store for recycling.

It is the responsibility of the owner to keep purchase receipts and other documentation. Did you not write down the passwords?

I understand the structure of the forum. One layer of my post was to foster an actual discourse about the fairness of the current consumer agreement. I think we can all benefit by looking at these things regeneratively.

My purpose here is ultimately to get suggestions on how to dispose of an ipad I don't want. I don't claim ownership in any way. I've contacted the original owner (a failed restaurant franchise) and received no response. Apple support 5 times.

I am addressing apple corporately in my post because these are technically the apple hosted forums. Let me imagine the junior VP of marketing taking this idea and running with it? This will be a growing problem that will contribute on some level environmentally. More worrying are the implications on privacy. But like you said, this is just an apple user to user forum.

If you will re-read the terms of use here, we are not allowed to discuss Apple policies or decisions. That is not within the scope of the forums - technical help on how to use the device is.

And, asking if Apple should be responsible for disposal is not. Rephrasing the question to “how can I dispose.....” is.

As well, there is no one from “Apple corporate” here. If you wish to address the junior (or any) VP, send a snail mail letter to their corporate address - that would be the best way to get their attention.

If Apple will not accept it for recycling, then take it to a local recycler as I had suggested. That is one of two ways - the other being you take a hammer to it and then turn it in. That will destroy any chance of extracting any private data on it.
