I had a one yr. subscription of Office 365. I let it lapse as I do not use Power Point. Excel, etc. I understand there is a free. WORD program I can use. How do I get that? And where do I download it?

Any of your MS Office documents can be accessed, edited, and saved by the free, 64-bit LibreOffice suite. It will have far better Office document compatibility than Apple's free Pages, Number, and Keynote applications that are not clones of MS applications. LibreOffice also has several user guides for its component applications.

Microsoft does not give away a fully functional version of Word, or any of their other applications. There are trials, that end in your decision to subscribe to Microsoft 365 or purchase Office 2019 for Mac. Other options have been mentioned, though Pages will attempt to translate your Word documents both on opening and exporting, as there is no native Word document editing. Pages is still back at Word 2013 partial support until the Pages product team announces otherwise.
You can get Pages right from the Mac App Store. The interface is to say the least not Office so there will be a learning curve and it is free now a I do believe it has been a couple of years since they stopped charging for it. But if you go with Libreoffice or OpenOffice there interface is pretty much the same as Word and Such and the best of all the are open source and free.
If you have Libre Office (or Pages), you can right-click on the Word-file, and choose Get info. There you have the possibility to choose to Open with Libre Office + select ‘Change all’. All your Word-docs will from now on automatically open in LibreOffice
The free app LibreOffice can open, edit and save Word documents in Word format or their own format. It does a better job of accessing and using Word documents than Pages.
If you only use Word for personal letters, why aren't you using Pages, it comes free with your Mac.
If I do not repurchase Office 365, how do I recover and/or use what I produced while I had the subscription?
I do not have Pages. Can I download it? Maybe my Mac is too old to have had it?
Yes, it is on the Mac App Store, exactly how old is your iMac??????? Pages will open all of your old MS Word files, it can even save the MS Word format.

Had Office 365 and it ran out. I understand there is a free Microsoft WORD. How can I get that? Office 365 is way too much as I do not use Microsoft except for personal letters.. etc. Thank you.
