How do I wipe an Airport Extreme that no longer works?

I have an Airport Extreme that no longer works / seems to not power on. I'd like to send it in for recycling, but am not sure how to first get the information off it (it was used for Time Capsule backups for at least a couple of years). Thanks for any suggestions!

So what you have is not an Airport Extreme.. but a Time Capsule.. which was used for Time Machine backups.

If the unit is dead sorry but you have no choice but to open it up and pull the drive.. And this is important to do as long as you did not encrypt your backups. A person could retrieve data like bank account info.. so that is a no no.

Apple I think does a recycle program and you can trust them to securely delete the info. Other places I would not be too sure.. check with Apple.. but for me personally I would do it myself.. so nobody gets their hands on the info.. and too bad if it goes into ewaste collection.
