Sliding the magnetic closure through the band connector, or lug is to open the band completely... not to remove the band.
As you know, in 2018 it was redesigned so that the band can be opened completely, by sliding the connector through the lug.
If yours won't fit through the lug then you can't open it completely. It's not made that way.
However, that has absolutely nothing to do with removing the band.
There is a release button on both ends. Remove both ends (lug and all)

The other end comes off the exact same way you got the first end off.
Look for the second release button on the back.
Apple Support:
"Using the Milanese Loop
"In 2018, the Milanese Loop was redesigned so that you could open the band completely by sliding the magnetic closure through the band connector, or lug. On earlier Milanese Loop models, the closure won't slide through the lug."
In other words, the pre-2018 Milanese Loop must be destroyed to be removed.
I have that exact same one. You have one end off now for the other end you push the button on the back of the watch and slide the connector out sideways and the band is removed.
We must be talking about different models. On mine the slide comes off easily, but the other end, the magnetic closure, is NOT a slide configuration but rather would have to come through the lug but can’t (which explains Apple’s c.2018 redesign).
Gentlemen (or Ladies). Thank you. What I had missed is that BOTH ends have sliders. With marginal eyesight and poor lighting I had seen and thought that only one end was so configured. Thanks for putting up with me.
Hold down the band release button, then slide the band across to remove it.
(see steps 3 and 4 from the link that sberman posted above)
Yes.
I have a pre-2018 Milanese and a friend has the one I gave him (silver). Neither of us has to destroy the band to remove it.
The “trick” is to dispose of all components of the previous band and replace the entire assembly.
If you are trying to remove the band from your watch there should be an attachment lug on each side of the Watch. As has been stated press the button and slide each end off. If you are try to remove it from your wrist just loosen it and slide it over your hand.
Perhaps you could post some pictures?
It appears that the watchband end-piece will not fit through the strap guide without being cut (that is, destroyed) in the process. Is there a trick involved? This is Series 2 watch and Milanese Loop (i.e., metal watchband).
I know I can buy a new one, either from Apple or a knock off. It appears, however, that the existing Milanese Loop watchband end-piece will not fit through the strap guide without being cut (that is, destroyed) in the process. Is there a trick involved? This is a Series 2 watch.
Great, glad to hear it. But that's news to Apple, apparently, which states (again, FYI):
"...magnetic closure through the band connector, or lug. On earlier Milanese Loop models, the closure won't slide through the lug."
HOW did you remove the band, please.
